Our Story

The story of TEDxTartu began more than 10 years ago when TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conferences started sharing their speeches with a global audience in 2006. These 18 minute long talks spread like wildfire and gained the attention of a remarkably large audience.

A couple of years later, TED opened applications for a licence to organise local TEDx events, which would follow the TED format and rules, but would be organised by the local people.

Immediately, both in Tartu and Tallinn, a small group of TED fans gathered together and took an initiative to organise the first TEDx events in Estonia.

The first TEDxTartu event took place on February 27, 2010.

TEDxTartu events offer a chance to hear the birth stories of groundbreaking ideas and to spend a day in an inspiring atmosphere.

Our wish is to bring together potentially like-minded people and introduce new initiatives and ideas that deserve to be shared, for they inspire all of us to change the world for the better.

However, while doing so, we wish to make sure that as many people as possible would be able to take part of this sharing of ideas.

That is why we are passionate about the speeches held at our events being translated to Estonian. In addition, we have designed our webpage to be easily accessible. Our conferences are also accessible for those who move around in a wheelchair: Science Centre AHHAA, where we hold our conferences, has all the neccessary entryways and elevators.

So far, we have organised more than 15 TEDxTartu events, including live broadcasts of TED conferences and smaller-scale salon nights of TEDxTartuSalon.

We have created a platform on which more than 100 fascinating speakers have shared their stories on topics like sustainability, culture, innovation, censorship, and the future.

TEDxTartu conferences are organised by a small group of inspiration-driven and knowledge-hungry volunteers.

The conference series was kick-started by the youths of Domus Dorpatensis Foundation and through the years our team has expanded and changed. So far, more than 100 people have been involved with the organising of TEDxTartu events at different times and as we are making our way through our second decade, we keep growing and growing!

The story of TEDxTartu is by no means finished! In Tartu, a city famous for great ideas, there is still plenty of food for thought that needs to be explored, discussed and spread. Thus, we continue providing a platform for those ideas just as we have done for so many years.

See you on April 15, 2023!
